On June 5th, 2010, the Minnesota Thunder Elite Academy 90/91 Blue team, formally Bangu Tsunami Stars, won its seventh State Cup title making it the most titles any team from Minnesota has claimed.
After hours of morning rain, the field in St. Croix was full of mud. With a continuing drizzle, MTA and Woodbury took the field to play the U19 State Cup championship game. Being a formal rival and meeting proir in State Cup games, Woodbury had proven to be stiff competition. However today MTA would prevail to make history. After about fifteen minutes of slipping and slidding, MTA took the lead with a goal from Steph Brandt after which there was no looking back. The final score was 6-0 with goals contributed from five different players.
This is not the first time that this team has made Minnesota Soccer history. In 2003, they were the first U12 team to win State Cup at the U13 level.
The team will now continue on to the US Youth Midwest Regionals in Dayton, Ohio at the end of the month where they hope to advance to Nationals in July.
